Elmer Rocks: Although the sea was dead, there were lots of passerines about on the land, especially around the hotspot set-aside and the Poole Place areas. It felt like a day which should produce something good and although it didn’t reach those dizzy heights, it was certainly lively with common migrants, with hotspot corner living up to its name and Blackcaps and Chiffs everywhere. My minimum totals were:- (OM)

Chiffchaff – 60,     Blackcap – 40,     Whitethroat – 6
Willow Warbler – 1,      Reed Warbler – 1,     Meadow Pipit – 50,

Elmer Rocks: A flat calm sea again, with 4 Sandwich Terns W being the only birds of note, apart from a gathering of several hundred hirundines offshore (Swallows and House Martins) buzzing about back and forth – though I didn’t attempt a count! On the rocks, 35 Ringed Plovers, 15 Turnstones, a single Sanderling and 8 Oystercatchers were all roosting.

Along the beach were a single Wheatear, a Pied Wagtail and a couple of Yellow Wagtails.
Chiffchaffs were very obvious this morning, with 15 in the gardens and hedgerows behind the beach. At Poole Place the Coal Tit was again in the fir trees, often calling but remaining stubbornly elusive at times and proving difficult to photo! (OM)

08 September, 2023

15 Ringed Plovers were along the shoreline. Most of the interest this morning was in the Elmer hotspot wood, where 3 Spotted Flycatchers were in the trees by the rife. Also logged were 3 Blackcaps, 6 Chiffchaffs and a single Willow Warbler. Further back, in the corner of the woods, a flock of 20 Long-tailed Tits was active with up to 5 Chiffchaffs amongst them.

Nearby, at Poole Place, a Coal Tit (scarce here) was singing repeatedly and showing occasionally in the fir trees, whilst 2 Chiffchaff and 30 Goldfinches were also present there.(OM)
