19 October, 2020

Not one for complaining about a southerly wind, but the change in direction brought about a drastic halt in the finch movement with small numbers of Goldfinch and Linnet apart. With the large numbers of passerines in the area of late, I was bemoaning the lack of Merlin, one duly found this morning sitting in top of bush at the bottom of long wood.

Elmer Rocks & fieldThere wasn’t much happening offshore and all I logged was 13 Brent heading W and 3 Great Crested Grebes. The field margins were similarly quiet with just half a dozen Chiffchaffs and a Goldcrest for my efforts.

There was however plenty of vis mig – though not quite as much as yesterday – but the stand-out birds of the morning were Crossbills.. a minimum of 30 passed through, in flocks of 6,6,7 and 11+ in fairly quick succession, though there could have been more. Other totals (0800-1000hrs) included 280 Goldfinch, 40 Siskins, 25 Linnets, 10 Redpoll, 280 Swallows and 40 House Martins. Singles of Reed Bunting, Skylark and Grey Wagtail were also noted amongst the more regular species.(OM)

Elmer RocksAnother good morning to be out and although little was moving offshore I soon realised it was a good day for eastbound ‘vis mig’ so positioned myself at Poole Place. There was a steady stream of finches and hirundines moving through – such that it was difficult to try and keep pace with the movement whilst trying to identify and log stuff! I doubtless missed plenty, however It was quite exciting and at least 3 Crossbills – including an obvious male - came through with a Linnet flock (there may well have been more!), though most of the movement had eased off by about 1000hrs.

Other highlights today included a Great Northern Diver well offshore and 2 Red Kites over the fields at Poole Place, soon drifting off westwards.  Log below (0745-1100hrs):- (OM)
