23 September, 2025

A few bits from my shortish visits this morning/afternoon. (OM)

Atherington (1030 - 1230hrs):  Chiffchaffs were the main feature this morning, with small gatherings in the sunny and sheltered corners away from the brisk NE wind; I logged 30+ but there were doubtless more that I missed. Numbers of other warblers though were well down with just two Whitethroats and four Blackcaps noted. A nice Grey Wagtail was on the Atherington pools. Still lots of hirundines, several hundred passing through and some lingering, mostly Swallows, a good number of House Martins and fewer  Sand Martins. On the beach were just three Ringed Plovers, whilst offshore three Wigeon flying east, dropped onto the sea and there they stayed. Locals included two Jays, two Kestrels and three Buzzards.

Elmer Rocks - Poole Place (1430-1545hrs): On the rock islands there was a total of 62 Oystercatchers roosting at high tide. On the island nearest Poole Place the imm Shag was roosting  together with a single Redshank, the Shag eventually flying off east then landing on the sea opposite the old car park. Other waders included 40 Ringed Plovers, five sanderling, a Dunlin and 10 Turnstones.
