Ash-throated Flycatcher - Irvine California 26/05/2025

Very quiet in the patch this morning with c50 Swifts around Kents, good numbers of Med Gull still in the area, several Sandwich Tern, 2 Common Tern and a Common Gull on the beach. Offshore very quiet with 2 Gannet and 4 Curlew west, with the highlight of the morning being an adult Hobby near the old camp site attacking the Linnet flock. (BA, CN, OM)

A large number of Med Gull in the fields mid afternoon, estimated number of c500 with the majority in field north of the old horse paddock. An Artic Skua flew west at 14:45 close inshore, good numbers of both Gannet and Sandwich Tern, with a single Common Tern west and 4 Oystercatcher.

At least 350 Med Gull along Climping Beach up to Poole Place this morning in fine warm conditions, small numbers of Sandwich Tern moving also, as well as a Redshank and a Greenshank heard, with 8 distant Scoter east. Hundreds of Swift north of the old horse paddock, along with 50 Sand Martin, 15 House Martin and c70 Swallow.

A productive morning with over 100 Sandwich Tern moving west and about the same number of Med Gull Gull along the beach.17 Gannet offshore feeding with thousand of large Gulls further out. A Black-tailed Godwit east was a nice surprise, continuing on the wader front with 2 Redshank and a single Curlew west, and 2 Ringed Plover.

Good numbers of Swift present this morning appearing before a rain cloud and moving off east with c125 total this morning, also 11 House Martin and 5 Sand Martin, with just a couple of Swallow.

With a change in the weather and fewer people on the beach resulting c150 Med Gull still on the beach on my mid morning arrival, with 3 color rings read. Also 5+ Common Tern, 15 Sandwich Tern, 6 Little Egret, 2 Grey Heron, 5 House Martin and a Sand Martin over the setaside, and  several Swift still in the area.

A predictably quiet morning in glorious sunshine with a nice east south east breeze, found just a single Med Gull offshore, double figures of Sandwich Tern moving east and a Great-crested Grebe on the sea.  5 Little Egret, 2 Grey Heron and a  Redshank on the beach at Climping, and was the only wader present.  A Sand Martin, 15 Swallow moving east and about the same number of Swift seen in the area was the best of the rest.

 A good variety this morning around the fields north of the golf course and around the old camp site,  with several of Reed & Sedge Warbler, Reed Bunting, Yellowhammer, Chiffchaff, Linnet, Green Woodpecker, Greenfinch, Skylark, Whitethroat at least 3 Cetti's Warbler, with singles of Stonechat, Blackcap, Kestrel and Grey Heron. Also 2 Little Egret, 3 Great spotted Woodpecker, a few Med Gull moving west and 2 Lesser BB Gull in the Marina.

Good numbers of Mediterranean Gull moving offshore at Climping Beach this morning with over 300 seen moving mostly west.

 Very quiet at Poole Place this morning along with OM, with the highlight being a pod of about 8  Dolphin moving east, probable Bottlenosed. Also 1 Seal, with low numbers of Sandwich Tern, Med Gull, and Gannet, plus 2 Little Egret. Bailiffscourt, held still singing Chiffchaff, Whitethroat and Blackcap, with  a few Green Woodpecker, 2 Buzzard and a small party of  Swift.

 A quite morning offshore at Climping beach with a Fulmar and 5 Common Scooter east mid morning, 5w Gannet , several  of Med Gull and Sandwich Tern and a Commic Tern  lingering offshore, plus a single Great-crested Grebe. 6w Oystercatcher and 3 Ringed Plover along the beach. A quick walk around the fields produced Buzzard, Kestrel, Cetti's and Reed Warbler, 2 Yellowhammer with several of Swift's, Whitethroat and Skylark.

 An immature Little Gull went west at Elmer at 08:30 this morning and a Manx Shearwater west close inshore at 15:10. (OM)

Just a quick visit around the patch this morning with 5 Whimbrel, 2 Bar-tailed Godwit east, and 5 Sandwich Tern offshore from the river mouth. A Red Kite flew east north of the golf course mid morning with 2 Cetti's Warbler heard and several each of  Blackcap, Whitethroat, Yellowhammer, Reed Bunting, Reed Warbler around the old railway carriages site. Small umbers of Swallow and Swift, 2 Little Egret a Grey Heron and 2 Common Buzzard made for a surprisingly productive morning.

Two Spotted Flycatcher the highlight of  a quiet stroll around the patch this morning and 3 singing Lesser Whitethroat being the best of the rest. A group of 10-12 House Martin flew east over the hotel, with a steady trickle of Swallow constantly movingThe land small numbers of Swift. Large group of Gulls again distantly offshore following the trawlers with 23 Oystercatcher west and just a few Sandwich Tern moving.

 Very quiet offshore this morning with just small numbers of Gannet & Sandwich Tern amongst the large number of Gulls distantly offshore.  Late Brent Geese and 2 Diver moving east, 2 Lesser Whitethroat, and 5 Yellowhammer.

Yesterday 12/05  4 Artic Skua moving east at 08:34, a Great Skua on the sea, 2e Med Gull, c50 Common Scoter east, 5 Whimbrel, 22w Oystercatcher, 5 Dunlin, 11 Sanderling and 4 Ringed Plover along the low tide early morning, 5 Great-crested Grebe o/s.

 Circa 30 Swift in this morning also about c45 Swallow and 2 House martin. Very quiet around the bushes with 2 Lesser Whitethroat again. Offshore very quite with 6 Great-crested Grebe on the sea,  2 Sandwich Tern & 2 Whimbrel moving east, small numbers of Gannet and 7 Ringed Plover along the beach.

Yesterday Sunday 04th there was 3 Red Kite north east, 1 Whimbrel south and early evening my first Great Skua flew east.

With a hazy sea this morning combined efforts at Climping this morning was Great Skua offshore, 3 Great-crested Grebe and 8 Sandwich Terns. 4 Sanderling around the beach and  evidence of breeding Plovers in the area so observers are asked to be careful were they tread. 2 Lesser Whitethroat and good numbers of both Blackcap & Whitethroat in the area.

 A little variety this morning with a Dartford Warbler, not usually seen in the patch this time of year, which could indicate a nesting bird. A Corn Bunting and Whinchat around the set-aside with 2 each of Ringed and 2 Little Ringed Plover. 3 Lesser Whitethroat in the area good numbers of Whitethroat, Reed and Sedge Warbler, at least 4 Cetti's Warbler heard and singles of Wheatear and Yellowhammer.

Two Pomarine Skua went east from Climping car park this morning although distant, but passage was very slow with just 19w 21e Sandwich Tern, 8w 7e Gannet, 1w 2e Whimbrel, 8w Oystercatcher, 2n Med Gull 1e Ringed Plover, 1 Swallow and 1e 3os Great-crested Grebe.

A Hobby over  the set-aside this morning was the first report of the year, as was a Whinchat in the field south of the old camp site. (DB) The Little-ringed Plover still present this morning as well as the Lesser Whitethroat in the old horse paddock. 2 Wheatear present, a Mistle Thrush in Bailiffscourt, and a Common Sandpiper around the rocks at Poole Place. Quiet offshore with just small numbers of Gannet and Sandwich Tern, with 6 Great-crested Grebe on the sea.
